Homemade Playdough

Having the kids home full time has been a challenge with lockdown. Their usual playgroups, family visits, and other activities we would normally do are all non-starters.

At first, I felt like I had to have amazing, exciting, and over the top things for them to do each day. I tried to think outside the box and come up with crazy activities we had never done, to really keep them engaged and distracted from the lack of normalcy we were finding ourselves surrounded with.

As things slowed down and lockdown carried on full steam ahead, I have dialled it back and realized I was only adding additional stress and tension, to myself and to them, but trying to make every day magical.

Sometimes less is more and you need to sit on the sofa all day doing nothing. So, I'm working on keeping it simple these days.

I was thinking back to some of the activities we loved most when I was growing up. Playdough jumped into my mind instantly. It's been ages since I made this for the kids, but it was time to grab the mixing bowl and whip up a batch.

We have had so much fun using this recipe in the last couple of weeks. We all sit at the dining table, in our pj's, and just play. It's even been fun for me! Sipping my tea and playing with playdough is my new meditation people!

Try adding a few drops of essential oil to your dough for a lovely smelling sensory experience! I like using lemon, eucalyptus, and lavender for a relaxing and soothing blend.

  • Prep Time: 20 mins
  • Cook Time: 1 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ½ Cup Salt
  • 1 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 0 Food coloring

    1. Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
    2. Remove from heat and add flour.

    5. Optional: Add in a couple drops of essential oil to add a lovely fragrance to your playdough. See our lavender oil here.
